The beginning
Sagar Daryani and Binod Homagai, college friends in Kolkata, started with a kiosk-scale momo business. Public founder interviews consistently cite about ₹30,000 of personal money. The format was small (often 250–300 sq ft in later years), the product was one category done well, and the city was Kolkata — not a typical venture launch pad in 2008.
A third name, Murali Krishnan, appears in some cap-table / founding mentions; Daryani and Homagai remain the public promoters (Daryani ~18%, Homagai ~15% in 2025 press).
The problem
Momos were a street food with huge demand and almost no national branded, hygienic, standardised chain. The organised momo market is still a fraction of a much larger informal one (Daryani has pegged organised ~₹3,000 crore vs informal many times larger).
The idea
Make momos a QSR category: clean stores, a short menu, consistent recipes, and later sister brands (Wow! China, Wow! Chicken, Wow! Kulfi). Add cloud kitchens for delivery and a frozen FMCG line for kiranas and quick commerce.
Early execution
Years of single-city density preceded national expansion. Tiger Global’s entry (2019 coverage) and later Khazanah-led Series D (2024) professionalised the cap table. 2025 brought more capital including Haldiram’s Kamal Agrawal and Singularity AMC; Dec 2025 tranche took post-money to ~₹2,838 crore.
Frozen momos via quick commerce (about ₹5 crore a month cited in 2025 FE coverage) are a second factory. FMCG was ~7% of sales with a 25–30% ambition over three years in that period.
Business model
How value moves
- In-store food margin (majority of sales; ~60% dine-in / takeaway vs 40% cloud in one 2024–25 split).
- Delivery commissions as a cost of marketplace demand.
- Frozen / FMCG gross margin and longer reach without four-wall rent.
- Small-box real estate to keep capex per store lower than a full-service restaurant.
Growth strategy
Cluster expansion (Tamil Nadu became a surprising second geography after Bengal), recipe SOPs, delivery partnerships, and now Gulf export talk. The growth constraint is operators and kitchen consistency, not Instagram.
Major milestones
2008–09
Kolkata kiosk genesis; ₹30,000 story.
2011–16
City expansion; recipe standardisation.
2019
Tiger Global-era funding; national ambition.
2021–24
Series C/D; 650–700+ stores; frozen line.
2025–26
Further Series D; 850+ stores; IPO talk for 2027.
Challenges, failures and adaptation
QSR is execution-heavy: oil prices, wages, food inflation, and delivery platforms’ commissions. A momo is a low ticket; volume must be relentless.
The 2026 cover image circulating online uses a “₹2,460 crore” flash figure. That number is not used as a verified valuation or revenue in this story. Latest documented post-money in late 2025 is about ₹2,838 crore. Treat viral infographics as marketing art, not filings.
GMI analysis
The following is Grow My India’s interpretation of documented information. It is not a statement by the company.
What we can learn
Standardise a street food before you franchise it.
How to apply it. Write the recipe as a 1-page SOP with weights, times and plating photos. Mystery-shop it weekly.
Small boxes scale faster.
How to apply it. If rent would break a 1,500 sq ft dream, design a 250 sq ft version that still delivers the hero SKU.
A second product should share the kitchen.
How to apply it. Frozen momos reuse the same core. Adjacent products that need a new factory are a different company.
