The beginning

Falguni Nayar left a senior career at Kotak to start Nykaa in 2012, in her late forties — a founder profile that still stands out in Indian startup mythology. Children Anchit and Adwaita Nayar later became operators of Beauty and House of Nykaa brands respectively.

The original gap: international and prestige beauty was either grey-market, under-distributed, or locked in a few city stores. Digital-native Indian shoppers had cash and curiosity, but not a trusted shelf.

The problem

  • Fakes and grey imports destroyed trust in online beauty.
  • Department stores were limited in assortment and education.
  • Brands wanted a serious India partner, not a discount marketplace.
  • Consumers needed content (how to use) as much as SKUs.

The idea

Be the authorised, content-rich beauty destination. Combine e-commerce, physical Nykaa stores, and later owned brands (Kay Beauty and others) so Nykaa captured both retail margin and brand margin.

Early execution

Nykaa listed in 2021 in the first wave of Indian consumer-internet IPOs. The stock then de-rated as growth and profitability were debated. The 2024–26 period is the rebuttal: sustained mid-20s GMV growth, expanding EBITDA margins, and FY26 crossing ₹10,000 crore revenue with PAT of ₹204 crore (company earnings releases).

Store network expanded (265 stores in 90 cities cited in Q2 FY26 materials; 237 stores at FY25 year-end in other recaps). Rapid/hyperlocal stores were added for speed.

Business model

How value moves

Customer→Value→Product→Distribution→Revenue→Retention
  • Resale of third-party beauty (retail margin + marketplace commissions depending on the vertical).
  • Owned brands (higher gross margin).
  • Physical stores (discovery + pickup + trust).
  • Media / advertising to brands on the platform.

Growth strategy

Content (tutorials, influencers, Nykaa TV-style education), exclusive launches, loyalty, stores in high streets and malls, and a house of brands. Fashion was the harder second act; beauty funded the company.

Major milestones

  1. 2012

    Nykaa founded.

  2. 2014–19

Scale e-commerce; first stores; owned brands begin.

  3. 2021

    IPO of FSN E-Commerce Ventures.

  4. 2023–25

    Margin rebuild; store expansion.

  5. FY26

₹10,022 crore revenue; $1B mark; PAT ₹204 crore.

Challenges, failures and adaptation

Quick commerce (Blinkit, Zepto, Instamart) now sells beauty too. Nykaa’s answer has been its own rapid stores and assortment depth — but minutes-delivery is a real threat to impulse SKUs.

Fashion GMV has grown slower than beauty. Conglomerate temptation is real; specialist discipline is the asset.

GMI analysis

The following is Grow My India’s interpretation of documented information. It is not a statement by the company.

What we can learn

Sell trust in untrustworthy categories.

How to apply it. If fakes exist in your market, make authenticity visible: invoices, serials, brand letters, returns. Price for that, do not discount it away.

Content is sales enablement.

How to apply it. For every SKU family, publish one how-to that a first-time buyer can finish in 90 seconds.

Offline is not a betrayal of D2C.

How to apply it. If 70%+ of category spend is offline, a store is distribution — not a nostalgia project.
